DOCMAN's

flickr: selected sets and essays

At the end of 2004 I discovered www.flickr.com, then in business for about six months in beta version and way before it was taken over by Yahoo. I was an immediate fan and for years uploaded a picture per day (since 2008 no more than one a week however). Both my own and from old family collections.
Anyway, about 3500 uploaded pictures later with more than 2 million views combined, flickr remains my virtual home in photography. Without it I would never have started the real-life home that Docman's GaGa Garage Gallery has been since 2010.
Below a selection of my better sets and photo essays.

1. sets

1860-2000: FAMILY HISTORY
pictures of my forebears on both my father's and my mother's side, beginning with a great-great-grandfather. Many of the pictures are accompanied by stories with links and references to other pictures and people.

SET OF SETS
organization: (most of) the flickr sets arranged thematically with links to all of them individually

1911-2007: ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER
In 1911 my grandfather made twelve watercolors in the medieval town of Rothenburg, Germany which werre later published as a book. In 2007 I followed in his footsteps and tried to photograph the exact same spots..

2005-2013: TEXTURE, PATTERN & RHYTHM
My main fascination in photography: finding natural and constructed patterns around me; Small and smaller as well as large and larger. Both in my immediate surroundings and wherever else my path leads me. Man made and natural. This is one set that keeps growing...
 1916-1919: MY GRANDFATHER'S BABY ALBUMS
Between her birth and her third birthday my grandfather photographed my mother in a surprisingly modern way. He put together two albums of these pictures with snapshots avant la lettre and unusual points of view.
2012: THE SIGNBOARD - REVISITED
a set dedicated to a signboard from a shop in Amsterdam which I have been carrying around most of my life. In 2005 I first photographed the decaying board. The original set has a non-linear structure via taglinks and can be approached here as well.
1916-1987: MY MOTHER PUCK LENSVELT
a set dedicated to my mother, a wonderful homemaker and accomplished photographer who hardly found the time to pursue that craft except for in the extraordinary snapshots she made of her family life.
2005-2012: DINNER SQUIRCLES
an ongoing effort to photograph some of the diverse dinners on our table in a similar way: as squared circle or squircle. Together they were made into a poster and an accompanying cookbook is planned.
1918-1945: HOUSE ON A DIKE
A set of pre-WWII photos of the idyllic house my mother grew up in on a seadike just outside of Veere. This set as well has been constructed in a non-linear way which enables the spectator to freely roam through house and surrounding area.
2005: ROMANESCO'S FALL
In 2005 I made a picture of a romanesco, then a vegetable unknown to me.
Mainly because of its characteristics as a natural fractal it became my most popular picture on flickr. That fall I recorded its natural decay.
1919-2010: MY FATHER SANDER HESSELINK
a set dedicated to my father, violinist and teacher who worked his butt off al his life to support his six children and was a wonderful parent while we were children. He inspired a love of music and litterature in me.
2005: A BUILDING
Near my former house in Alkmaar I once discovered the fascinating aspects of a new and (at first sight) boring appartment building. In this non-linear set one can discover at leasure the geometric patterns I saw by following the tags in one's own order.

1970's: GREEK ISLANDS
During the 1970's I spent my summers in the Greek islands: Crete, Patmos, Paros, Samos, Amorgos, Kos, etc. These are some pictures from those days long gone. Tourism, yes, it existed but it still coincided with the old way of Greek life...

1976: CZECHOSLOVAKIA
In 1976 I bicycled through then Czechoslovakia. It was a depressing trip as I felt the oppression of the Russian occupation. But the countryside was wonderful and the 'beautiful decay' I found in the crumbling townhouses was more than worth it to record.
